Special Directions for Hosting a Domain Name
Special Directions for Hosting a Domain Name
The domain name will be your own choice and your own property. It establishes your website as your own. You will need to register it, and arrange hosting by Patrick’s server. This process may take a couple days or weeks to complete. It is not super technical, but it does have some important details involved.
How is this done?
- Think of a new custom domain name you want to use.
- Look on Godaddy.com to see if it is available, get an account, and reserve it for 1-2 years.
- Do not register for hosting at Godaddy.
- Transfer the domain to my hosting service at the proper time. This may involve some detailed communication with Godaddy.
- If it becomes confusing, we can do these steps together.
What if I already have a custom domain?
It is possible to use it, but will need to be transferred to my hosting service. Some effort may be needed to do a custom transfer in this situation.
Transferring to new hosting provider
After you buy a domain from GoDaddy, you can set it up to host your website with a different provider. You can achieve it by updating the nameserver (NS) records for your domain name to point to your new hosting provider’s nameservers.
Here’s the steps:
- Purchase your domain: from GoDaddy.
- Sign up with Patrick’s web hosting.
- Copy these nameserver (NS) details that belong to your new hosting provider, Patrick. These are
ns893.websitewelcome.com and ns894.websitewelcome.com - Log in to your GoDaddy account, and navigate to your domain management settings.
- Locate the DNS (Domain Name System) settings: and find the section for nameservers.
- Update the nameservers to the ones provided by your new host Patrick (use above)
- Save the changes.
- Once the DNS changes have propagated (which can take anywhere from an hour to 48 hours), your domain will point to your new web host, and your website will be live at your domain name.
